5 Steps to Setting Intentions for Your Calmest Year Yet

Writer's picture: Stephanie NelsonStephanie Nelson

Ah, the start of a new year. That magical time when we promise ourselves we’ll finally get it all together. But let’s be honest—how many times have those resolutions left you feeling more overwhelmed than inspired? I know that feeling all too well, sitting there, pen and paper in hand but no idea where to start.

What if, instead of chasing after a to-do list of goals, you focused on something simpler: creating a year that feels calm, aligned, and true to who you are?

Here’s the thing—calm doesn’t just happen. You have to create it. And the best way to do that is by setting meaningful intentions. Let me walk you through how to do it. It’s easier than you think.

Step 1: Start with Self-Awareness

First things first, you’ve got to figure out what calm actually means to you. Is it fewer back-to-back commitments? More time spent in nature? Saying “no” without guilt? Everyone’s version of calm looks different, so take a moment to reflect.

Here’s what worked for me: I grabbed a notebook and wrote down the moments last year when I felt at peace. Then I jotted down what disrupted my calm. Spoiler: too many late-night Netflix binges didn’t make the cut.

Try this: Take 10 minutes to journal about when you felt most calm last year and what threw you off. It’s a great way to get clear on what’s been working and what needs to change.

Step 2: Spot What’s Out of Alignment

You know that nagging feeling when something’s just... off? That’s a sign you’re living out of sync with what really matters to you. Maybe you’ve been saying yes to things that drain you or putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own. It’s time to figure out where life feels out of balance.

Here’s a trick I love: Draw two columns on a piece of paper. Label one “What drains my calm?” and the other “What restores my calm?” Be brutally honest. Once you see it on paper, it’s easier to decide what to let go of and what to keep.

Step 3: Set Intentions That Feel Good

Let’s get real: Intentions aren’t about adding more to your plate. They’re about creating space for what matters. Instead of setting rigid goals like “I’ll work out five times a week,” try something more open-ended, like “I move my body in ways that bring me joy and relaxation.”

Here are a few calm-focused intentions to get you started:

  • “I’ll prioritise rest to nourish my mind and body.”

  • “I’ll create small moments of mindfulness in my day.”

  • “I’ll spend more time in places that make me feel at peace.”

The key is to keep it simple and tied to how you want to feel. Think less hustle, more flow.

Step 4: Turn Intentions into Everyday Rituals

Here’s where the magic happens. Intentions are great, but they’re only as good as the habits that back them up. Think about little rituals you can build into your day that help you stay aligned with your calm intentions.

For me, mornings are sacred. I start with a cup of tea and a few minutes of journaling. Some days, I’ll add a quick walk or stretch. Nothing fancy—just something that sets the tone for a calmer day.

Ideas for rituals:

  • Begin your day with a calming affirmation or gratitude list.

  • Dedicate 10 minutes to mindful colouring, doodling, or stretching.

  • Create an evening wind-down routine with a cup of tea and your favourite book.

Step 5: Check In and Adjust

Here’s the truth: Life isn’t always calm, no matter how good your intentions are. And that’s okay. What matters is checking in with yourself and making tweaks along the way. Think of it like steering a boat—a little adjustment here and there keeps you on course.

Every month or so, take a few minutes to reflect. Ask yourself:

  • “What’s been working to bring me calm?”

  • “What’s been throwing me off?”

  • “What can I do differently moving forward?”

Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. You’re creating a life that feels good—and that’s no small thing.

Let’s Make This Your Calmest Year Yet

Setting intentions isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about honouring what matters to you and creating space for calm, even when life gets messy. So, take a deep breath, grab a notebook, and start with one small intention today. You’ve got this—and your calmest year yet is waiting for you.
